On March 26, 2025, the 9th China International Aquatic Products Technology Conference was grandly held at Tongwei International Center in Chengdu.
In 2024, China’s total aquatic product output reached 73.66 million tons, marking a year-on-year increase of 3.5%. This sustains China’s position as the world’s largest producer for over 30 consecutive years. Aquaculture output accounted for 60.62 million tons, growing by 4.3%.
According to customs statistics, the total import and export volume of aquatic products in 2024 reached 11.172 million tons, up 5.79% year-on-year, while the total import and export value reached $43.836 billion, down 0.91% year-on-year.
Exports amounted to 4.2396 million tons, an increase of 11.62% year-on-year, with an export value of $20.74 billion, up 1.35%. Imports reached 6.9324 million tons, up 2.52% year-on-year, with an import value of $23.097 billion, down 2.85%. The trade deficit was $2.357 billion, a decrease of $954 million compared to the same period last year.
Throughout 2024, the performance of major export varieties varied. Shrimp, tilapia, tuna, algae, and freshwater crayfish showed growth in both volume and value, while cephalopods, shellfish, eel, and mackerel saw increased volume but decreased value. Crab and large yellow croaker declined in both volume and value.
On the import side, weakened domestic consumer demand led to high inventory levels and peaked import demand, resulting in an overall decline in imports. Major imported products such as fishmeal, cod, salmon and trout, cephalopods, shellfish, and catfish experienced decreases in both volume and value. Only fishmeal, crab, and lobster saw growth in both volume and value.
