A Major Breakthrough: Local Breeding of Baijiao Sea Bass Successfully Achieved After 30 Years

After more than three decades of reliance on out-of-province fry, Doumen District has successfully achieved localized industrial breeding of Baijiao sea bass fry—a game-changing advancement for the entire industry.
Recently, the unveiling of the National Demonstration Base for the Marine Fish Industry Technology System (Baijiao Sea Bass Demonstration Park) marked the official entry of Baijiao sea bass into the realm of national-level strategic support. This milestone reflects the growing importance and national recognition of Baijiao’s sea bass sector.
The first batch of 3 million high-quality, locally bred sea bass fry—developed independently by Zhuhai experts—has been successfully delivered. This breakthrough marks a fundamental shift in the region’s aquaculture landscape, breaking long-standing dependencies on external sources and improving survival rates from under 60% to over 80%, while significantly reducing costs for local farmers.
Baijiao sea bass, now protected under China’s national geographical indication scheme, is farmed across 39,000 mu (approximately 2,600 hectares) in Doumen District. With production exceeding 156,000 tons annually, Baijiao accounts for over 60% of China’s total sea bass output, solidifying its position as a vital pillar of Zhuhai’s agricultural economy.
For years, the industry faced major challenges—unstable fry quality, disease vulnerability, high logistics costs, and a lack of traceability. These factors hampered the industry’s growth and modernization. To address these issues, Doumen District, in partnership with local state-owned enterprises, established the demonstration base to attract talent, foster innovation, and integrate government, academia, and industry resources.
The newly launched demonstration base will work closely with the National Marine Fish Industry Technology System, a strategic initiative supported by China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Ministry of Finance. Through collaborations with academic institutions and research centers, the base aims to promote standardized, scalable, and branded development across the Baijiao sea bass value chain.
We will continue to increase investment in research and development, focusing on key areas such as broodstock reserves, superior breed selection, and cost optimization to further enhance the core competitiveness of the industry. By leveraging the advantages of the demonstration platform, we aim to attract more high-level talent into the Baijiao seabass sector and help position Zhuhai as the “Capital of Chinese Seabass.
This advancement provides strategic support for the future of Baijiao sea bass. It also enhances farmer incomes, strengthens village collective economies, and stabilizes the industry structure—paving the way for broader market reach, including further development of deep-processed sea bass products for global export.
