Devastating impact from Typhoon “Butterfly” in Southern China
The first typhoon of 2025, Typhoon Butterfly, made landfall in Hainan last Friday (June 13) and struck Guangdong the following day. Along its path, the typhoon brought violent winds and massive waves, followed by sustained torrential rains. The severe weather has caused catastrophic damage across many parts of Hainan, Guangdong, and Guangxi, with the aquaculture sector taking a significant hit.
In Yangjiang, Guangdong, the fish farming industry has been severely affected. Days of heavy rainfall triggered floodwaters that carried large amounts of mud and silt into the sea, turning the coastal waters into thick, murky sludge. Near the Cross-sea Bridge in Yangjiang High-tech Zone, numerous cage-farmed fish died due to sudden exposure to freshwater, mud, and oxygen depletion. Local farmers described the scene as heartbreaking, with dead fish floating densely across the area and a strong stench lingering throughout the bay.
This disaster has once again exposed the vulnerability of open-sea cage aquaculture to extreme weather events, raising urgent concerns about risk management and sustainable development in the industry.
