What is Red Drum Fish?

Distinctive Appearance and Features
Red Drum Fish (Sciaenops ocellatus), commonly known as American Redfish, is a premium aquaculture species that has been successfully farmed in Zhuhai’s Doumen and Jinwan districts since the early 2000s.

Despite its name, the fish has a silver-gray body with a characteristic black spot near the tail base, making it easily recognizable. When processed into fillets, its flesh is treated with CO (color enhancement), giving it the bright red color preferred in international markets.

Nutritional Value
Red drum fish is prized for both its taste and health benefits:

  • Low fat, high protein: A lean seafood ideal for modern healthy diets.

  • Balanced amino acids: Provides sufficient essential nutrients for a nutritious diet.

  • High flavor amino acids: Naturally savory taste, more flavorful than many other commercial fish species.

Aquaculture in Zhuhai

Introduced in 2000, red drum fish farming has grown rapidly in Zhuhai. Today, it ranks among the top aquaculture species in the Pearl River Delta, thanks to stable supply and rising demand.

Market Potential
Red drum fillets are highly competitive in both domestic and international markets, especially in the U.S. and EU. The combination of bright red fillet color (after CO treatment), tender texture, and boneless quality makes it ideal for grilling, steaming, or pan-frying.
